Admission Requirements

LPN-ADN Program Admission Requirements

Official high school or GED test score transcript (along with partial high school transcript), and official transcripts from all colleges attended

Official transcript from LPN Program

Achieve an SSU English Placement score or transfer credit equivalent in ENGL 1101 or 1201 and an SSU Math Placement score or transfer credit equivalent in STAT 1150 or 1150A

Grade C or greater in AHNR 1197, BIOL 1130, and PSYC 1101

Possess a valid, active, non-restricted LPN license

I understand that if admitted to the Nursing program, I will be responsible for:

Caring for clients of all ages, ethnic, and social backgrounds.
Traveling to a clinical site up to 75 miles away from campus and arriving at designated clinical time.
Securing a reliable source of transportation.
Devoting up to 12 hours a day to my education, including reading, group study, and clinical preparation.
Spending up to 20-30 hours a week in classroom, lab, or hospital setting.
Scheduling a minimum of 12 hours between Mother/Baby clinical and other clinical assignments.
Providing Federal and State Background Checks, a urine drug screen, proof of flu immunization, and any other documentation needed to comply with clinical site’s policies and procedures and meet clinical affiliation requirements.
Providing a completed SSU Confidential Physical form prior to first day of class, maintaining required current immunizations as requested, and proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR.
I understand that a felony conviction on my record may disqualify me as a candidate for licensure as a registered nurse. Certain felonies restrict clinical site placement. Clinical attendance is a requirement of the program and failure to meet those requirements could lead a student to unsuccessful completion of the program.

For individuals with experience in the armed forces of the United States, or in the National Guard or in a reserve component, the SSU Department of Nursing will:

Review the individual's military education and skills training;
Determine whether any of the military education or skills training is substantially equivalent to the curriculum established in Chapter 4723-5 of the Administrative code;
Award credit to the individual for any substantially equivalent military education or skills training.

International students must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL score of 84, with a minimum English-speaking score of 26 to be considered for admission.

Criteria for Admissions (Beginning for Autumn 2026 applicants)

Official high school transcript denoting high school graduation or official GED test score transcript.
A GPA of 2.5 or higher in high school, or for those with a minimum of 12 college credit hours, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
For students with college credit, any science courses considered for application toward their degree must have been completed within the last seven years with a minimum grade of C. The SSU School of Nursing requires the following science courses for degree completion: BIOL 1130, BIOL 1131, BIOL 3650, and BIOL 3750. The sciences of applicants who have earned a degree and currently work in the healthcare field may be considered at the discretion of the Admission, Progression, and Graduation Committee or the Director of the School of Nursing.
An acceptable TEAS score is required by March 1st for Autumn admissions and by October 1st for Spring admissions to be considered for admission to Shawnee State University School of Nursing.
The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) entrance exam from the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) measures the applicant’s level of performance in Math, Science, Reading, and English/Language to ensure applicants are prepared to begin nursing courses. All Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program applicants must achieve a composite score of 58.7% (Proficient) or higher on the TEAS exam and a minimum of 58.7% (Proficient) in each of the four subjects. Applicants are responsible for the cost of the exam. Applicants who do not pass the exam must complete the remediation and may retake the exam up to two additional times within one year. A minimum of 14 days is required between each attempt.
To be considered for admission, non-native English-speaking students must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL score of 84 with an English-speaking score of 26 or higher or a minimum Duolingo score of 120.
Applicants who have been dismissed from an external nursing program will be considered for admission two years from the date of dismissal.

To be considered for admission to the Dental Hygiene Program, the following items must be received in the Admissions Office by March 1:

Student Observation Form (Job shadowing is required *12 hours of observation in two different settings*)
If you are a current SSU student, you do not need to re-submit high school transcripts or previous college credit

(Level Two Pathway is designated for students who have completed the Level One Pathway pre-requisite courses.)

Prelicensure Nursing Bachelor's Degree - Level One Pathway

Admission Requirements

Level one pathway is designated for students who need to complete the first-year pre-requisite courses in preparation for application to the level two pathway.

Criteria for Admissions (Beginning for Autumn 2026 applicants)

Official high school transcript denoting high school graduation or official GED test score transcript
A GPA of 2.5 or higher in high school, or for those with a minimum of 12 college credit hours, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
To be considered for admission, non-native English-speaking students must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL score of 84 with an English-speaking score of 26 or higher or a minimum Duolingo score of 120.
Students in the Pre-BSN program must complete the prerequisite courses for the Prelicensure nursing bachelor’s degree (BSN) program at a grade of C or higher.

All science courses (BIOL 1130, BIOL 1131, BIOL 3650, BIOL 3750, and CHEM 1121) must be completed within seven years of starting the Prelicensure BSN program with a grade of “C” or higher. The sciences of applicants who have earned a degree and currently work in the healthcare field may be considered at the discretion of the Admission, Progression, and Graduation Committee or the Director of the School of Nursing.
It is recommended that students consider taking the TEAS exam by the end of the Spring semester in the level one pathway to ensure they meet the July 1st deadline, should remediation and retesting be required.

Admission Requirements

A grade of C or better in high school chemistry, algebra, and biology or its university equivalent or higher.
ACT score of '18' or better in Science Reasoning. Exceptions may be made if the student has already demonstrated successful completion of required chemistry and/or biology classes.) Note: The ACT can be taken more than one time and many students improve their scores by taking college courses in biology and chemistry.

Apply to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program by completing this Selective Admission application.

Program deadline for first consideration is April 1. Those applicants completing the above requirements by April 1 have first consideration for admission to the program for the Fall, however, applicants are admitted to the program throughout the Summer on a space available basis. When minimum requirements are met and there is no space available, students will be listed as alternates.

Alternates are permitted to register for all of the courses in Medical Laboratory curriculum for fall semester. When vacancies occur, alternates in good standing will be granted full admission to the program. Although there is no guarantee there will be an opening, in past years many have gained access to the program in this manner.

- For students applying with less than 24 college semester credit hours, GPA will be calculated using high school transcripts
- For students applying with 24 or more college semester credit hours, GPA will be calculated using college transcripts
Possess a science/math GPA of 2.5.
- For students applying with less than 24 college semester credit hours, GPA will be calculated using high school transcripts

Minimum composite score on ACT of 18, or equivalent SAT. The ACT requirement will be waived for those applicants with a confirmed bachelor's degree at time of the application
Perform 20 hours of job shadowing in a minimum of two different PT settings with a licensed PT or PTA (10 hours in each setting).
